Woodbury Common

Woodbury Common forms part of the ancient East Devon Pebblebed Healths, an important national heath land site and a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The area comprises of large rounded quartzite pebbles from the Triassic Age upon which sits heather, gorse and rough grasses. The area is naturally attractive to a huge range of rare butterflies, birds and even insect eating plants!

There are many miles of permissive paths open to walkers, cyclists and horse riders; the Royal Marines even have permanent assault courses there thus carrying on a military presence that goes back to Napoleonic times. For more information visit www.clintondevon.co.uk.

The terrain mixes wide access tracks with loose pebbly descents, flowing singletrack, stream crossings with the occasional boarded crossing, and shaded wooded sections. There is something for everyone here.

We ride on The Common on a regular basis, normally meeting at the Four Firs Car Park, Grid Reference SY031863.

Other rides around Woodbury Common

Across the Sidmouth road, Aylesbere Common provides an occasional add-on ride to Woodbury Common with the same features but in a more compact area. There is some superb flowing singletrack that will provide you with a loop of around 40 minutes. You can even link the two areas mostly off-road too!
